On Monday 6 August, a gas tanker crashed into the back of a lorry on a motorway in Bologna, causing a massive explosion and fire.

The collision caused a fire which turned into a huge fireball that was seen from miles away. The bridge they were on was partially melted by the explosion and ended up collapsing under them.

Italian media have said that 3 people died and 67 were injured as a result of the explosion, which is shown below.

The fire from the collision also spread to a car park below, and caused several more vehicles to explode. Police closed off a number of roads in the area, resulting in severe traffic delays in the area.

Those who were injured had been hit by debris and broken glass from the explosion, Italian media reported.

“The shockwave from the blast was extremely violent. Many of the injured received cuts from flying glass, which had shattered,” said Giovanni Carella, emergency coordinator for the local fire service.

A video shot from a parked car showed someone being engulfed by flames after the tanker exploded.

This news follows a separate incident in Italy last week, where 12 migrant workers died in Puglia when the van they were travelling in crashed into a lorry.
